Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Step 1: Remove the deck from the mower.

    This will make it much easier to remove the spindle.
  2. Step 2: Remove the blade and the pulley from the worn spindle.

    You may want to repair both spindles even though only one is showing symptoms. , Be careful when removing the bolts.

    Use penetrating oil and let it soak.

    If the bolts break off, don't panic.

    You can drill and tap new mounting holes slightly offset from the original ones. , Take the spindle to the bench and suspend the casing over the jaws of a vise or similar object. ,, It doesn't take much.

    This should force the shaft out of the spindle casing. , You will be left with a spindle casing with the top and bottom bearings exposed. ,,,,,,,, It will come rest against the inner race of the upper bearing. , Put the repaired spindle back onto the deck and you are good for another 5 years or so.
  3. Step 3: Remove the worn spindle from the deck.

  4. Step 4: You must now dismantle the spindle assembly in order to replace the bearings.

  5. Step 5: Reinstall the pulley nut a few turns onto the spindle shaft.

  6. Step 6: As shown in the photo

  7. Step 7: strike the nut with one sharp blow from a small sledge.

  8. Step 8: At this point

  9. Step 9: you should be able to remove the shaft from the spindle casing.

  10. Step 10: Using a screwdriver

  11. Step 11: tap out each bearing from its seat.

  12. Step 12: Write down the number stamped on the side of the bearing and go to your local auto parts store to purchase a new one.

  13. Step 13: Clean all the parts well.

  14. Step 14: Press one of the new bearings into the lower bearing seat.

  15. Step 15: If there is a sleeve that fits over the shaft within the spindle casing

  16. Step 16: then make sure and place that into the casing before pressing on the upper bearing.

  17. Step 17: Press on the upper bearing.

  18. Step 18: Assemble the shaft to the spindle.

  19. Step 19: Using a pipe or socket

  20. Step 20: press or tap the retaining sleeve onto the spindle shaft.

  21. Step 21: That's it.
