As you can't use your sword, you can use the candle as a weapon to defeat enemies.
To get rupees without defeating enemies, go to the top-right corner of the map, and go into a secret area where you'll get 100 rupees., Early on in the game, these will be your primary weapons along with the Boomerang.
Remember that in this game, arrows use rupees, so have plenty of rupees on you at all times., Once you get the Magical Rod, use it as your primary weapon, as it's a useful long-range weapon that can also do damage with strikes that are similar to the sword., This is the only time in the run that you can use your sword.
