How to Clean an M16 Service Rifle

Step-by-Step Guide

   Step 1: Get your M-16A service rifle and an M-16A cleaning service rifle kit.

   The kit consist of:
   Rifle lubricant Wire brush Barrel rods Cotton swabs Rifle cleaning solution A dozen rags Table or bench

   Step 2: Make sure the weapon is on safe and clear of ammunition.

   Press the button next to the trigger will put the rifle on safe. , When it locks look into the ejection port cover for any bullets in the chamber., Get all of the dust, dirt and oil off of the weapon.,, The pins are located on the lower receiver butt stock assembly. , Spray rifle cleaning solution inside of the upper receiver.
   
   Brush the inside of the upper receiver with the wire brush to get the carbon and dirt out.
   
   Next wipe the inside clean with a dry rag. , Spray the rifle cleaning solution inside of the trigger mechanism.
   
   Use cotton swabs to clean the inside of the trigger mechanism. ,, Let the firing pin and cam pins slide out, then slide the bolt of the bolt carrier.
   
   Clean all the carbon and dirt off these parts with the cleaning solution and cotton swab. , Scrub the barrel from the inside of the muzzle.
   
   Repeat until the barrel is clean. ,

   Step 3: Pull the charging handle back until it locks.

   Step 4: Wipe off the weapon with a dry rag.

   Step 5: Remove the rifle belt.

   Step 6: Disassemble and clean the rifle by removing the pins that hold the upper and lower receiver and pull the charging handle out.

   Step 7: Clean the outside of the upper receiver with a dry rag.

   Step 8: Clean the outside of the lower receiver butt stock assembly with a dry rag.

   Step 9: Remove the bolt carrier assembly from the upper receiver assembly.

    Step 10: Clean the bolt carrier assembly; remove the retaining pin on the side of the bolt carrier assembly.

    Step 11: Attach a clean barrel swab to a barrel rod.

    Step 12: Apply a thin coat of the M-16A lubricant on all metal parts of the rifle as you assemble it.
