How to Demonstrate That Oxides Formed by Nonmetals Are Acidic
Take a deflagrating spoon., Put some sulphur powder (a non-metal) in a jar., Take 1 spoon of sulphur powder in a deflagrating spoon. , Heat the deflagrating spoon using a minus heater. , Observe that sulphur first starts melting after a few minutes...
Step-by-Step Guide
-
Step 1: Take a deflagrating spoon.
You can get such a spoon in a chemistry lab , They are yellow in colour.,,,,, This is done so that the gas won’t escape the jar.,,,,,,, This indicates that the solution in the jar was actually acidic.
If it was the red litmus turned blue then the solution would be basic.
Therefore non-metal oxides are acidic in nature. -
Step 2: Put some sulphur powder (a non-metal) in a jar.
-
Step 3: Take 1 spoon of sulphur powder in a deflagrating spoon.
-
Step 4: Heat the deflagrating spoon using a minus heater.
-
Step 5: Observe that sulphur first starts melting after a few minutes and then starts burning and producing a gas.
-
Step 6: As soon as the burning starts
-
Step 7: put the spoon in a gas jar.
-
Step 8: Close the gas jar with a thick glass plate or lid.
-
Step 9: Remove the spoon from the jar.
-
Step 10: Add a small quantity of water to the gas jar.
-
Step 11: Close the jar again with a lid.
-
Step 12: Shake the jar vigorously.
-
Step 13: Pour the water which is in the glass jar into a watch glass.
-
Step 14: Take two strips of red and blue litmus paper (an indicator which is to know if a given solution is acidic or basic) and dip it in the water present in the watch glass.
-
Step 15: Notice that the blue litmus turns red while there was no affect in the red litmus.
