  1. Step 1: Install Hearthfire.

    The only way for this to work, is if you have this DLC.

    You can also adopt children/pets, and marry with the same DLC.
  2. Step 2: Go to one of the nine major cities/Holds.

    Solitude is the best if you want a big house. , Besides mods, this is the only way to obtain a house. , For example, Solitude's Jarl's quests are:
    The Man Who Cried Wolf, where you must interrupt the necromancer's ritual of summoning Potema Septim.

    Elisif's Tribute, where you must venture to a specific Shrine Of Talos, and place an item called 'Torygg's War Horn'. , You then become a Thane of the hold, the Jarl allowing you to buy property. (In this case, a house.) , You can now begin setting it up as you please.
  3. Step 3: Enter the Hold and speak with its Jarl.

  4. Step 4: Complete their two quests.

  5. Step 5: Return to the Jarl.

  6. Step 6: Purchase the house.
