Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Step 1: Insert your DVD into your computer.

    Do so by placing the DVD in the CD tray with the logo side facing up.

    If your computer doesn't have a CD tray, you'll need to purchase an external CD drive or use a different computer.
  2. Step 2: Open VLC Media Player.

    To do so, double-click the traffic cone-shaped VLC icon.

    If you don't yet have VLC Media Player, go to http://www.videolan.org in your browser and download it before continuing.

    If you're prompted to update, click Yes and wait for the update to finish downloading. , This option is in the top-left corner of the VLC window., It's near the top of the Media drop-down menu., It's in the "Disc selection" section of the "Open Media" window.

    If your computer has more than one DVD tray, click the "Disc device" box and select the movie's name. , This option is near the bottom of the page; clicking it brings up a drop-down menu., It's in the drop-down menu., Do so by looking in the box to the right of "Profile"

    If you don't see "(MP4)" in this box, click it and then select an option that ends with "(MP4)". , It's on the lower-right side of the window., Do so from the left side of the window., To do so, type filename.mp4 into this window, where "filename" is the name of the movie., This will save your settings., It's at the bottom of the Convert window.

    Your DVD will begin to convert to an MP4 format.

    This process will take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on your computer's speed and the size of the DVD.

    The video progress bar at the bottom of VLC Media Player's window will show how much of the video has been converted. , Once the DVD finishes ripping, click the DVD file to open it in your computer's default media player.
