Step 1: Open digiKam into any view that will allow you to see your images.
This will bring you to a screen where you can create your tags. , So to create a category, you might do the following:
Arizona/Skyline , That way, you can accomplish more, more quickly.
For example:
Arizona/Skyline, Arizona/Flora, LifeGuide Hub/RCC/2009 , If contiguous, you can use your SHIFT key to select all of them or the CTRL key to pick and choose.
Much the same as a lot of Windows software. -
Step 2: Click on Tag >> New...
If you don't do it on one of those images, you will deselect everything. ,, This will take you to the same dialog screen as before. -
Step 3: Create a hierarchy by using the forward slash (usually at the bottom left of your keyboard).

Step 4: Use the comma to separate multiple tag hierarchies.

Step 5: Select the images that you are going to tag.

Step 6: Right click on one of the images you just selected.

Step 7: Select the appropriate tag.

Step 8: If the tag you need isn't there

Step 9: select "Add New Tag...".
