Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Step 1: Ride the bike until the oil is up to normal operating temperature.

    Don't forget the little washer that goes on the bolt, or you'll be doing this operation twice. ,,,,,,, (Optional step) ,,, The manual calls for 4 litres, but this is usually too much as not all the oil drains. ,, If you see oil coming from this area, shut the engine down immediately.

    You may have a filter missing a gasket, or the gasket from the old filter stuck on the block.

    Refer to the notes below for instructions on how to check for a stuck gasket. ,
  2. Step 2: Place bike on side stand for 5 minutes to let the oil cooler drain.

  3. Step 3: Place bike on centre stand.

  4. Step 4: Remove the oil filler cap.

  5. Step 5: Locate the oil drain bolt

  6. Step 6: it is directly below the engine near the middle of the engine block.

  7. Step 7: Place the oil drain pan under the bolt.

  8. Step 8: Remove the drain bolt and let the oil drain.

  9. Step 9: When the oil has drained replace the bolt

  10. Step 10: tighten to 32Nm.

  11. Step 11: Locate the oil filter

  12. Step 12: it is forward of the drain bolt and is recessed into the engine

  13. Step 13: it is not visible except from below.

  14. Step 14: Place the drain pan under the filter.

  15. Step 15: Use the filter wrench to remove the filter

  16. Step 16: a little oil will run out while you are unscrewing the filter.

  17. Step 17: Pour the oil from the filter into the drain pan.

  18. Step 18: Let the last few drops drip from the engine into the pan.

  19. Step 19: Smear some oil on the rubber gasket of the new filter

  20. Step 20: just a little.

  21. Step 21: Fill the filter with fresh oil

  22. Step 22: this will take several pours as it takes time to seep down.

  23. Step 23: Screw the filter into the recess until finger tight.

  24. Step 24: Torque the filter to 11Nm

  25. Step 25: many people just turn the filter another 1/4 to 1/2 turn rather than using a wrench

  26. Step 26: do so at your own risk!

  27. Step 27: Pour fresh oil into the filler until the total used is 3.75 litres including the amount in the filter.

  28. Step 28: Replace the filler cap.

  29. Step 29: Start the engine and let it idle for about 45 to 60 seconds while observing the area around the filter.

  30. Step 30: Check the oil level in the sight glass before riding the motorcycle

  31. Step 31: and ensure it is between the high and low marks indicated in your owners manual.
