Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Step 1: Create a new document and fill it with black color

    Set it black and opacity around 20%, apply color to make it look like shadow. ,,,, To make it easy, go to planet layer, after that, select Magic Wand and click at the area outside the circle, then go back to texture layer and press delete. ,,,, To make it look smooth, go to Blur>Gaussian Blur>Radius 20>Ok.
  2. Step 2: then create new layer and use Ellipse Lasso Tool to create a circle selection area

  3. Step 3: this area would be the size of your planet.

  4. Step 4: Use brush tool and select dark blue from Swatches panel

  5. Step 5: apply color to the circle.

  6. Step 6: Select soft edge brush and go to brush preset

  7. Step 7: remove tick from Dynamic Shape box.

  8. Step 8: Use the same bush with white color to make a highlight

  9. Step 9: then deselect a lasso.

  10. Step 10: Place a texture photo that you want it to be your planet texture and press Ctrl+t to adjust the size

  11. Step 11: make it larger than the circle.

  12. Step 12: Set the texture to Overlay mode and opacity 80%.

  13. Step 13: Make the texture to a circle shape in the same size with your planet.

  14. Step 14: To make a planet atmosphere

  15. Step 15: create new layer and use Ellipse Lasso Tool to create a circle selection area in the same size with your planet.

  16. Step 16: Use brush and paint pale blue to the circle

  17. Step 17: after that set opacity to 70%.

  18. Step 18: Set the circle to Linear Dodge and use Ellipse Lasso Tool to create a circle in a smaller size with the pale blue circle

  19. Step 19: Feather 200

  20. Step 20: then press Delete.

  21. Step 21: Adjust the size to make it a bit larger than a circle.
